Does Pathology Agree with the Surgeon? Concordance Between Postoperative and Pathological Diagnoses in Cholecystectomy

Biography:

Brennan Smith is a 4th year resident at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. She works with the Department of Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the Henry Ford Detroit campus. She obtained her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2023 from Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, Masters degree in Biomechanics from the University of Kentucky in 2018 and undergraduate degree in Physiology from the University of Arizona in 2011. She is interested in acute care surgery, trauma and surgical critical care.

Research Interests:

Cholecystectomy is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States, with estimates ranging from 300,000 to 750,000 cases annually. Clinical indications vary widely, from biliary dyskinesia to acute cholecystitis. Surgeons rely on multiple tools to establish a preoperative diagnosis, yet intraoperative findings often differ, which can alter the surgical approach. We aimed to compare postoperative diagnoses with final histopathological findings. A single-center retrospective chart review was performed on all patients who underwent cholecystectomy, regardless of indication.
